The second virtual Helsinki Data Science Meetup was organized in November 5, 2020 in collaboration with Helen, a company producing and distributing electricity and heat to almost entire city of Helsinki.

Please find the presentation slides below.

Watch the entire meetup:

  • Data and AI at Helen, Mikko Muurinen, Head of Data & AI
    • The Finnish energy producer Helen set itself the goal to become carbon neutral by 2035. This shall be achieved for example by using AI in all sectors of the business. Learn about Helen’s Data Strategy, their desired future digital landscape and connected data platforms.
  • Short-term ML Forecasting in Energy Production, Sami Kojola, Data Scientist
    • As energy production runs on forecasts, data sets are crucial to provide signals for forecasting and precise estimation. Larger data sets provide better predictive accuracy and more accurate estimation. In the long run, it will be the data assets, not the modeling expertise, that will determine the benefits that an organization can derive from data science.
  • Mixed Bag of Data Science – Studies and Prototypes, Juha Riissanen, Data Scientist, Team Lead
    • Juha told about how Helen tested and chose from a range of different domains and tools that were in use in the company in 2018. They came to the conclusion that reusing is better than reinventing the wheel over and over again, and managed to reduce their tools and domains significantly.
